Northland Poultry Preservation LLC

About Us
Welcome to Northland Poultry Presevation! This is a new division of RowanTree Farm, our homestead near Hancock, Michigan, where we have been quietly providing eggs, poultry, and other farm products to select customers in the Keweenaw since 2002.Small farming has changed a lot in the past twenty-four years, and a big change has been the reliability of the USPS for rural deliveries. After our own and many others' heartbreaking experiences with shipped chicks from big centralized hatcheries (is there anything sadder than a box of dead babies in the mail?) we decided that there had to be a better way, so we decided to try bringing back the regional micro-hatchery!We will be able to offer production hybrid breeds of poultry, including broilers and layers of various types, as well as the heritage and rare pure-breeds that we have fallen in love with and are working to conserve. These chicks, poults, ducklings, and goslings can be delivered to your doorstep if you choose, and will NEVER have been subjected to the stresses of shipping through the mail! Please feel free to contact us with questions and suggestions. Although we are expert poultry wranglers, running a hatchery is brand-new to us, and we would welcome your feedback 🙂Colleen & John Hix

Production and Utility Hybrids
In this section are hybrid birds with superior production characteristics, like super egg laying, fast feathering and growth, or all-around hardiness. They will out-perform Heritage breeds in many ways, but will NOT breed true. To raise up replacement birds with the exact same characteristics, you will have to purchase chicks again and again, rather than breeding your own.

Heritage Breeds
These are the breeds that we are currently working with in our conservation efforts. While we firmly believe that modern production hybrids have their place, we are also commited to doing our part to preserve the unique genetics of Heritage fowl for future generations. All of our Heritage birds are carefully managed to avoid excessive inbreeding, and selected to meet the SOP for that breed. Heritage breeds are available as straight run chicks, or hatching eggs.

Icelandic Chickens are unique and hard to find, avid foragers and easy keepers, very alert for predators. They are a landrace breed with lots of variety, coming in a rainbow of colors and feathering. Many will be crested, with varied comb types, and quirky personalities. These little chickens are hardy, disease-resistant, excellent mothers, and lay a medium-sized off-white egg. Our flock is certified purebred by the importer.
Icelandic Chickens (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $9.00
Hatching Eggs $4.50

Mahogany Faverolles A unique mahogany-red variety of the more familiar Salmon Faverolles, these sweet and docile birds were developed in 1800’s France to provide winter eggs and gourmet table birds. They are calm, gentle, and absolutely beautiful, with their fluffy beards and silly feathered feet. Ideal for backyard coops as they tend to be non-foraging homebodies.
Mahogany Faverolles (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $10.00
Hatching Eggs $5.00

Swedish Svarthona (Swedish Black Hens) Little Goth chickens! These extremely rare birds are jet-black all over, including skin and combs, a smaller and hardier version of the Ayam Cemani. They love to forage, and are very cold-hardy, active, and alert, laying a medium-sized creamy egg.
Swedish Svarthona (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $25.00
Hatching Eggs $12.00

Delaware are a production breed developed in the USA in the 1940’s that was almost lost due to the emergence of the Cornish Cross into the broiler market. Delaware are a fast-maturing, early-feathering true breed that can give even the hybrids a run for their money as a dual-purpose farm fowl. They have a calm and friendly attitude, good flesh for the table, and lay lots of brown eggs.
Delaware (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $5.35
Hatching Eggs $2.60

Barred Plymouth Rocks are one of America’s oldest breeds, and so familiar you wouldn’t think they need conservation, but they have been bred away from their
roots as a dual-purpose fowl. We breed toward Barred Rocks that are mellow, extremely hardy, steady layers of big brown eggs that also make a tasty table bird.
Barred Plymouth Rock (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $4.69
Hatching Eggs $2.50

Mille Fleur D’Uccle Bantams These tiny bantams are gorgeous and make wonderful backyard pets. They are quieter than most chickens, and are very interactive, curious, and lively. The hens are good layers, although the eggs are small. Kids adore them.
Mille Fleur Bantam (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $6.50
Hatching Eggs $3.00

Silkie Chickens Some consider them strictly ornamental, but we keep Silkies for three very practical reasons: Silkie soup is amazing, they are awesome winter egg layers, and Silkie hens are excellent foster mothers. Our flock is primarily the Partridge variety, working on some Buff Splash and true Black as well.
Silkies (Price Each)
---
Unsexed Chicks $5.85
Hatching Eggs $2.85

Silver Appleyard Ducks A dual-purpose breed ideal for the homestead, Appleyards lay fewer eggs than the Campbells but can provide a plump, juicy duck for the
table. They are quite calm (for a duck), and forage well.

---
Unsexed Ducklings $17.00
Hatching Eggs $8.50

Auburn Turkeys A rare variety of heritage turkey dating back to the late 1700’s, Auburns are a rich chestnut-brown color, with the typical heritage turkey frame.

Unsexed Poults $19.00
Hatching Eggs $9.00

Embden Geese Large, pure white birds for meat and down. These are premium Embdens from heritage stock, fast-growing and hardy. | Unsexed Goslings $25.00 |
Hatching Eggs $12.00
